Within the interdisciplinary humanities major, English courses emphasize the study of both language and literature through extensive opportunities for reading and writing a variety of texts. In the reading, interpreting, and criticising of a wide range of texts, students confront human experiences as embodied through written language. Members of the English faculty emphasize the role of textuality in the material, intellectual, social, and artistic realms, and seek to create alternative traditions to the extablished canon. The study of English provides an essential education for both life and work.
